Takaoka copperware - Folded Paper Crane incense burner - Traditional crafts of Japan
Takaoka copperware, designated as a Primary National Traditional Craft, is produced in Takaoka city (Toyama prefecture, Japan) by skilled craftsmen, who creates beautiful castings thanks to the traditional techniques. Copperware is created by a cooperation of craftsmen during each manufacturing process like: molding, casting, finishing or coloring. Takaoka copperware started to be produced in 1609, when the daimyo of Kaga, Toshinaga Maeda (1562-1614), has invited casting masters to Kanaya-machi (Takaoka city). Since about a middle of the Edo Period (1603-1868), casting of copper alloys became widely popular. Takaoka copperware won a price during World Exposition 1873 Vienna and became well-known as Made in Japan copperware worldwide. Traditional techniques which have been passed down from generations past are still developing to this day. This is an incense burner shaped like a paper crane. Paper cran is most famous for Japanese Origami. This is a combination of traditional craft Takaoka copperware and paper cranes, and represents Japanese culture.
