[About incense sticks of Six Kneaded Incenses] Six Kneaded Incenses were originally a kneaded incense and its secret formula was transmitted from one generation to the next to be offered to the imperial court. This incense set is Kyukyodo maker`s fine incense, which has been transmitted to modern times. Their fragrances hasn`t changed from the kneaded incenses used by Heian dynasty. Six Kneaded Incenses have been used throughout 4 seasons and during celebrations. The compounding formula is a secret, but it is said it contains only natural and high-quality ingredients such as fragrant woods and it wonderful and complex aroma cannot be compared to any other kneaded incense. These incense sticks cannot be as refined as the original Six Kneaded Incenses, but this set was made to reproduce the fragrances which were loved by Heian aristocrats in a simple and handy way. [About Six Kneaded Incenses (Mukusa no Takimono)] Six kinds are the representative burning incense used in Heian period (794-1185). They are called: Kurobo, Baika, Kayou, Jijuu, Kikka, Ochiba, and four of them come from Genji Monogatari (Korobo, Baika, Kayou and Jijuu). [Kurobo] Its aroma is made of compounding of agarwood, clove, sandalwood, powdered operculum of a rock shell, white musk and kunriku powder. It is a winter fragrance, but it is also often used during the celebrations. [Baika] Ume (plum) blossoms Its aroma is made of compounding of agarwood, sentou, powdered operculum of a rock shell spikenard, sandalwood, clove and white musk. It is a spring fragrance based on an impression of ume (plum) blossoms. [Kayou] Lotus leaf Its aroma is made of compounding of spikenard, agarwood, powdered operculum of a rock shell, sandalwood, turmeric and patchouli. It is a summer fragrance based on an impression of lotus, which brings a refreshing feeling. [Jijuu] Chamberlain Its aroma is made of compounding of agarwood, clove, powdered operculum of a rock shell, spikenard and based on turmeric. Sometimes there is also sentou or musk added as well. It is an autumn fragrance composed with the impression of autumn wind. [Kikka] Chrysanthemum Its aroma is made of compounding of agarwood, clove, powdered operculum of a rock shell, kunriku powder, white musk and spikenard. It is an autumn or winter fragrance composed with the impression of the chrysanthemum aroma. [Ochiba] Fallen leaves Its aroma is made of compounding of agarwood, clove, powdered operculum of a rock shell, kunriku powder, white musk and spikenard. The amount and order of adding ingredients are quite same as in Kikka, but the quantity of agarwood or white musk has been increased.
